Israel, Jewish, and Theatre workshops

Wrestling not hugging

A keynote for educators on the need for a new paradigm of Israel-Diaspora engagement. This inspirational session offers useful ways of understanding our current situation, and practical suggestions for directions of future work. Its conclusions recently featured in the JCCA Israel Task Force report.

Patriotic Protest

A lecture/seminar on a selection of popular music in Israel today - an introduction to an inspirational and engaging resource for Israel education. Suitable for young people and for educators.

The Situation: Comedy?

"About The Oranges" uses humour to address the 'situation', and the relationship between Israel and the diaspora. What can be learned after two years' of performance around the world? This moving presentation includes performed extracts from the show, while asking how The Laughter of Pain and The Laughter of Shame clarify the nature of community, the arts, and ourselves. No prior knowledge of the show is required. First presented Spring 2005 in San Francisco.

Jewish Narrative Practice

What do we mean by 'Jewish Identity'? We often argue about 'Jewish', but rarely engage with 'identity'. If we apply current thinking about identity as personal narrative to our work, we may be able to say that to be a Jew is to be engaged in telling the story of the Jewish people. With the help of such thinkers as MacIntyre, Egan, Benjamin, Soloveitchik, and Buber, this lecture/seminar digs beyond the cliches into the meaning of 'story', 'narrative', and 'performance' to find an authentic yet broader and practical understanding of Jewish identity.

The Act of Judaism

Lecture/seminar/workshop drawing on the world of professional theatre to provide a fascinating new perspective on ritual by uncovering the performatice, or mimetic aspects of Jewish practice. Stanislavski, Brook, Dewey, and the Shulchan Aruch join forces. "All of Jewish life can be seen as a piece of community theatre. The trick is to learn how to perform it better."

Prayacting

Participatory workshop. The contradiction between kavannah and keva is a paradox experienced by every stage actor. Can teh world of theatre teach us anything about Jewish prayer? I suggest it can. You specify the tefila beforehand, and I will run a participatory workshop applying prayacting techniques to better connect the pray-er to the text and the ritual. This approach can lead to a series of lessons, or can stand as a one-off introduction.

Status Games in the Image

Participatory drama workshop that applies Status Games to our understanding of being created in the image of God. A practical guide that is both revealing and lots of fun. Together we practice how to play low status, high status, and to recognise status, in order to gain an understanding of Judaism's delicate dialogue between behaviour and being. With references to Genesis, the Rambam, and Impro expert Keith Johnstone.

Midrash Drama

Filling in the gaps - participatory drama midrash workshop. We tackle an extract from the weekly portion, examining it and bringing it to life through process-based drama. A workshop that is suitable for students, or that can be adapted for teachers wishing to adopt the technique.

The Heart of the Story

Participatory workshop. A hands-on engaging workshop about the process of story creation, choices, and possibilities. The participant emerges with tools and an understanding of the world of storytelling, which offers an important perspective on the storytelling of the Tanach. The workshop is also a lot of fun...

The Holy Actors of Genesis

Lecture/seminar. There were four actors in the book of Genesis. Four key characters who used costume, role play, props, and performance in order to convince their 'audience' that they were other than who they were. Why did they do it? How did they do it? And what do their stories teach us about acting, the roles we play, and being true?

Acting like an Angel

An acting workshop for actors and student actors. Drawing on techniques developed over several years of professional work in theatre and Jewish study, this workshop offers a thesis and practice for spiritual (and good) acting.
